The Paranormal Activity reboot film has found a director – filmmaker Ian Tuason. But who is the Toronto-based writer-director, and is he the right person to take the franchise forward?
Tuason started out making virtual reality horror shorts which amassed over 14 million views on YouTube. He was featured at the Marché du Film NEXT Pavilion in Cannes and won the 2016 Watty Award for his book Everyone and No One, a mystery story.
He is also the creator of VR game Stab It, a game where, you guessed it, stab things! The game is rated 5 stars on the Meta store.

The Paranormal Activity reboot won’t be his first dive into feature film though. The Undertone, released in 2025, is a horror film that follows a podcast host who receives creepy recordings that drive her to madness. Reviews are high, with critics noting that on Rotten Tomatoes that a mix of brilliant sound design and strong narrative make the movie worth a watch.
The film was shot in Tuason’s childhood home and at the 29th Fantasia International Film Festival, it won gold audience award for Canadian films. A month later, the distribution rights were sold to A24.

After a brilliant year for the director, landing the Paranormal Activity gig will surely be a highlight for Tuason.
This will be the eighth entry in the franchise that started in 2007 and Paramount have already got this one marked down as a priority theatrical release. So when it eventually hits the big screen, there’s much to be excited about with this fantastic director at the helm.
