Fortnite isn’t a game that you would expect to be creepy, but it certainly can be.
When the game first launched in 2017, players were pulled in by the dopamine hits of getting a Victory Royale, and developers Epic Games have done a fantastic job in keeping their audience entertained.
While the current Fortnite Battle Royale maps are filled with life, the Chapter 1 map has always been creepy to me.

Devoid of life, you can find yourself in massive locations without a single soul for miles. This gives the player the same vibes as a liminal space, making them feel uneasy, even if it’s only on a subliminal level.
The lack of loot in the C1 map also adds to the creepiness. It feels as though you have no choice but to explore these dystopian areas in order to find enough equipment to win the game.
Nowadays, the Fortnite maps are filled with locations. Back in the day though, you could run for minutes on end without encountering a major point of interest, and this can lead to an uneasy feeling. With no sounds but your own footsteps, it can make you feel like you’re being watched or that you are completely alone in the world. You can decide what one is worse.
There’s one location on the C1 Fortnite map that trumps them all in terms of liminality.
That location is Wailing Woods.

Wailing was a location close to the edge of the map and it wasn’t very popular compared to PoI’s like Tilted Towers. This was due to the lack of chests and accessibility if you didn’t fall within the circle.
If you dropped there, it was likely that you would be all alone in these massive woods. All that would be around you was a maze (the central location), abandoned cars, and run-down shacks.
All of these creepy additions are just in Battle Royale, but Save the World (Fortnite’s PvE mode) is much more terrifying.

If you didn’t know, STW was originally planned to be a horror game. This idea was taken and turned more family-friendly, as we can see by the art style.
Despite that though, some relics from the past have made their way into the final project.
In some forests around the map, if you are wearing headphones, you will hear a creepy woman singing in the background. If you try to follow the singing, it will move, making it impossible to track the source.
In other cases, audio of children laughing can be heard in playgrounds.
The designs of the enemies, called husks, are incredibly disturbing. The basic husks wear what looks to be a hoodie. If we take a closer look at this though, we can see that it is actually the ripped-open skin of a human head.

Around the map in STW, there are houses that imply some horrific stuff. In the attic of a daycare, there are beds, but the disturbing part is that there is no exit.
Another discovery made was in the basement of a regular house, where there is a room that implies someone was tortured inside of its walls.
So many regular games can have dark subjects hidden beneath its surface, but who would’ve thought the battle royale that took the world by storm could be one of them…
